FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BC Hydro Not For Sale
July 5, 2002
WAC Bennett, former premier and builder of BC Hydro and BC Rail is probably turning in his grave by now. Does this BC Liberal government not realize that BC Hydro and BC Rail is the lifeline of this province? Or is the BC Liberal Government hell bent on its destruction?
Why would you sell an energy cash cow (built, bought and paid for by the taxpayer,) that is a constant producer? Sure it has to be maintained but shouldn't we be focusing on creating a new and more energy efficient cash cow before we sell off this one?
When Mr. Glenn Clark, former NDP premier and minister of BC Hydro, wanted to sell off the profitable International side of BC Hydro, it was akin to having the farmers ranch hand benefit privately from selling the cream of the cows milk without having to pay for it.
The provinces energy resources belong to the taxpayers of this province and as such should be protected. We have a greater opportunity of inviting business into this province by regulating our own lower rates that would clearly benefit them as well as our citizens. Our focus should be on Job Creation not on selling our resources.
BC is unique in that it cannot be compared to either the European or US market. Their complexity of higher population, smaller land base and multi levels of government-control differ greatly than that of our province. The Province of BC is a Sovereign province within Canada, and like the other provinces, has absolute control over its resources. We have a greater
opportunity to set our own standard of living. All we have to do is do it.
