PRESS RELEASE

November 24, 2002

ON THE BREAK-UP OF BC HYDRO

It is unfortunate that Gordon Campbell after his promises to be up front with the citizens of this province has let them down.

His behind the door secrecy, partly disclosed by Mr. Paul Nettleton, on BC Hydro has shown that the BC Liberal government has no clear vision as to how BC Hydro would best benefit the province and its people as a whole.

BC Hydro should provide businesses and individuals with the lowest rates possible while encouraging private development of new energy by way of downstream benefits, wind power, etc. for local use with excess energy sold back to the province at fair market value. Not development for the sole purpose to export to the USA. That function should remain with the province.

Is this government saying that BC Hydro administration of customer and financial services cannot be fulfilled within this province by British Columbian employees ? I can appreciate the need to work with American States particularly on the west coast. But surely this should be controlled by British Columbia not America.

IF I were Gordon Campbell, Premier of this great province, I would think twice before breaking up a beneficial resource such as Hydro. After all this does not belong to him, it belongs to the people.
