Another Spin For Liberalism?
Your article
in the Friday March 28, 2003 Vancouver
Sun “We support war in Iraq, board
of trade tells U.S.” by David Hogben
and David Reevely is a very insightful
and compelling piece which evidences the
precise nature of what is wrong with liberalism
both in British Columbia and in Canada.
Peter Legge, Chair of the
Vancouver Board of Trade, writes a letter
on behalf of The Vancouver Board of Trade
stating that its members are “shocked
and embarrassed” that Canada wasn’t
participating in the war on Iraq. The
article describes how Mr. Legge, cites
a poll by Pollara (the Federal Liberal
pollster) indicating that “six out
of ten Canadians wanted Canada to send
troops to Iraq”. The Pollara poll
was allegedly conducted between March
3 and 11, and for some unexplained reason
is not publicly released until three weeks
later on March 28, 2003. The same article
reveals that Peter Legge, an obvious Liberal
supporter, attended a $1,000 a plate fund-raising
dinner for Federal Liberal Leadership
contender Paul Martin.
In the Sun article it is
also revealed U.S. Ambassador Cellucci,
who initially raised the subject of Canada’s
lack of participation in support of the
U.S., had spoken with liberal Premier
Gordon Campbell and “struck a chord”.
Did it not occur to any
of these liberals, in particular Mr. Legge,
Premier Campbell, and Paul Martin that
they should have spoken up some time ago,
not weeks into the war effort? Was Mr.
Legge not aware that the war was in progress?
Why respond only after comments made by
Ambassador Cellucci, and after the Alliance
Party spoke of their US support and, on
their disgust and contempt for the Liberals
shameful attitude? What was the Liberals
and Vancouver Board of Trade’s position
before then?
Is their present position
as advanced by Peter Legge based primarily
on the fact that members of the Board
might lose economic benefit, or does their
new position reflect broader political
concerns more consistent with a response
to the Ambassador of a long-time ally
currently at war with an evil regime.
Somewhat ironically,
it was Mr. Legge’s recent publication
featuring Gordon Campbell on the cover,
and an interview exposing Campbell’s
‘soft side’ that preceded
Gordon Campbell missing in action over
a simple drinking and driving hearing.
In the Vancouver Sun article we see Mr.
Legge acting once again as ‘cover’
for Federal leadership hopeful Paul Martin.
It is fair comment to conclude that both
Premier Campbell and Mr. Martin have something
in common. They are both liberals trying
to cut into BC’s 56% Alliance-Conservative
vote.
