REFORM SPEAKS AGAINST BY-ELECTION IN SURREY PANORAMA

Vancouver, BC: At a Reform BC board meeting held in North Vancouver on Saturday September 4, 2004, the directors asked President Shirley Abraham to announce that Reform BC is opposed to a possible by-election in the Surrey Panorama constituency. There is a legal requirement to have a by-election when the seat is vacated, however the government has the ability to legislate an amendment when a general election is near.

Abraham stated that common sense would dictate deferring the by-election until the May 17, 2005 provincial election, as the cost to the taxpayers doesn’t warrant the expense involved and the newly elected MLA would likely sit in the Legislature for no more than a month.

Abraham concluded with, “Reform BC supports the Liberal government in their attempts to balance the budget (one of our basic principles) and hopes to see them use restraint in calling a by-election”.
