SHOULD SVEND BE EXCUSED?

Shirley Abraham, President of Reform BC, asks, “How has justice been served by excusing Svend Robinson’s behaviour? Was it his high profile that saved him?”

Abraham says that our friends to the south didn’t excuse Martha Stewart – she is going to jail. Neither did the British excuse author Jeffrey Archer – he went to jail. Both Stewart and Archer have made significant contributions to society and lived within the law for decades. In fact their contributions far exceed any contribution that Svend Robinson has made as a back bencher in Parliament. Yet, their high profiles didn’t save them from jail. And as a law maker he should NOT be exempt from the law.

Abraham states that we must ask whether our justice system is serving us well when this kind of behaviour is excused. What message does this send to our young people? What message does it send to the millions of law abiding citizens across this country? It’s time our people asked for a better justice system.
